638 DARK OTHER [THE]
Weinbaum, Stanley G.
Fantasy Publishing Company, 1950,

First Edition, Soft cover, Fine, Good. Book. Arfstrom, Jon
First edition, first printing. Soft cover bound in pale green wrappers with black lettering. Bound with jacket illustrated by Jon Arfstrom stated on front jacket flap. No printing statement on copyright page. Binding priority is the "C" state per Currey, pg. 510. The book shows some age-darkening along the edges, normal for a book this age, but otherwise is clean, square without stains or previous owner's marks. The jacket is intact except for two large tear-outs: the first is at top head of the spine panel and measures 4 cm across and 2 cm down. The second tear-out is across the bottom edge of the front panel - it measures 9 cm in length by 1.5 cm at it's deepest. The jacket is extremely fragile and has several closed tears, the longest at the crease between the front flap fold and front jacket panel. To see the full extent of the jacket's condition, we've scanned the jacket in sections. First is the front jacket panel, then the front panel, spine and front flap, then the last scan is the the rear panel and back flap.

The novel has been optioned for The film version starring Matt Damon (originally cast for actor Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad) as marooned Martian astronaut Mark Whatney. "An excellent first novel.Weir laces the technical details with enough keen wit to satisfy hard science fiction fan and general reader alike [and] keeps the story escalating to a riveting conclusion."- Publisher's Weekly (starred review).

Book Club Edition, first printing. First printing code #J47 on page 535 and code #3591 on rear jacket flap. Maroon boards with black lettering on spine. Omnibus, collects The Legion of Space (1947) The Cometeers (1950) and One Against the Legion (1950), all originally published in pulp magazines before being published in hardcovers by Fantasy Press. The interesting collecting point about this BCE is it also collects in hardcover for the first time the novella "Nowhere Near" another Legion of Space story, which was first published in pulp magazine and strangely was not listed in the Contents page of the BCE. Aside from some scuffing along the bottom edges of the boards and light age-related wear at the top edge, the boards and page block are square, bright and without marks. Excellent condition for this book club. The jacket has light crinkling at top and bottom corners of the spine panel with one small, closed tear (2 cm in length) at the bottom edge of rear jacket panel. 666 RANDOM ACTS OF SENSELESS VIOLENCE
Womack, Jack
Atlantic Monthly Press, 1994, 0871135779

First Edition, Hardcover, Very Fine, Very Fine. Book.
Hardcover first edition, first printing and first US edition. Very fine (unread) copy in very fine jacket. Not a book club, remainder or ex-library copy. Previously published by HarperCollins UK in 1993. First novel in Womack's Terraplane series. SF novel about five months in the life of a young girl living in near-future New York who witnesses (and chronicles in her diary) the decay and collapse of her family and civilization. "[Random Acts] isn't a comforting book. It's a work of raw courage, confronting the dark without sf's usual shields of irony or isolated intellect. I hope that doesn't scare you off, as it seems to have scared the US publishers so far. Our field is not yet so overrun with genius that we can afford to let even one brilliant, night-minded, novel slip through the cracks." - Locus, November 1993, pg. 21.
