Originally published as a magazine serial in 1943, later published in hardcover by Hadley Publishing in 1947. Re-published by Corwin in 1952 as a "fix-up" with revised text fixing numerous errors in the previous Hadley edition. (A. E. van Vogt coined the term "fix-up" in his 1975 autobiography "Reflections of A. E. van Vogt" referring to his previously published stories altered to fit together by adding new cementing material.) 1,000 copies were printed.
