Weir, Andy
Crown Publishers, 2014, 0804139024 / 9780804139021

First Edition, Hardcover, Fine, Fine. Book. White, Eric
Hardcover first edition, first printing and first hardcover edition. Stated First Edition with "1" present in complete number line. Not a book club, remainder or ex-library copy. (Hardcover editions are in their 17th printings and counting, of which this is a first printing.) Signed by Weir in silver ink and inscribed "4/12/14 San Francisco" on the title page. Business card for The Emerald Table also enclosed. The April 12 date is two months after it's official publication date, making this a very collectible copy. Signature only by Weir at The Emerald Table, a literature salon in North Beach, San Francisco. The Martian spent 26 weeks on various Bestseller Lists, including the NY Times. Small dent (caused by shelving) with associated crinkling at lower spine panel corner, else fine (unread) copy in fine jacket. A straight, square copy in near pristine condition. Weir studied orbital mechanics, astronomy, and the history of manned spaceflight to make the book as realistic as possible. Originally self-published on his own website in 2011 after being re-buffed by publishers, popular demand motived Weir to publish a Kindle version which recorded 35,000 downloads in a three month period. This drew the attention of Crown, who purchased the rights and re-published it in print in 2014. The novel has been optioned for The film version starring Matt Damon (originally cast for actor Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad) as marooned Martian astronaut Mark Whatney. "An excellent first novel.Weir laces the technical details with enough keen wit to satisfy hard science fiction fan and general reader alike [and] keeps the story escalating to a riveting conclusion."- Publisher's Weekly (starred review).
