Trade paperback, first printing. Advance Reading Copy. Spine creased with slight lean. Slight soiling due to wear, else very good condition. Signed by Varley on the title page. For those who may have wondered where John Varley has been and where he is now, Varley's newest novel speaks loud and clear."- Locus, June 1992. " - Clute, Science Fiction: The Illustrated Encyclopedia, Classics of the 1990's, pg. 235. Small dent (caused by shelving) with associated crinkling at lower spine panel corner, else fine (unread) copy in fine jacket. A straight, square copy in near pristine condition. Weir studied orbital mechanics, astronomy, and the history of manned spaceflight to make the book as realistic as possible. Originally self-published on his own website in 2011 after being re-buffed by publishers, popular demand motived Weir to publish a Kindle version which recorded 35,000 downloads in a three month period. This drew the attention of Crown, who purchased the rights and re-published it in print in 2014. The novel has been optioned for The film version starring Matt Damon (originally cast for actor Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad) as marooned Martian astronaut Mark Whatney. "An excellent first novel.Weir laces the technical details with enough keen wit to satisfy hard science fiction fan and general reader alike [and] keeps the story escalating to a riveting conclusion."- Publisher's Weekly (starred review).
